How to Prevent Stomach Flu?
Stomach flu, or Gastroenteritis as it is medically
called, is contagious by nature. It is better to avoid sharing
drinks, food or utensils with someone who is already affected by the
stomach flu. It can also be passed through vegetables and fruits
that are grown in contaminated water. The stomach flu viruses exist
everywhere, but can easily be kept at bay with simple precautions
and clean habits. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least
20 seconds after using the toilet, changing diapers or before
handling, preparing or eating food. Ironically, alcoholic-based hand
sanitizers and wipes do not kill certain bacteria and viruses that
can be washed off your hand by simple soap and water. People who are
known to be contaminated with the stomach flu should avoid
preparing, serving or handling food for others to prevent the spread
of the disease.
After an episode of stomach flu, all towels and
laundry that were used and could possible contain strains of the
virus should be laundered and steam cleaning is recommended for
cleaning carpets and floors soiled with vomit.
In short, the best and most effective way to
protect yourself and your family from this illness is by maintaining
the strictest standards of hygiene.
