What is Stomach Flu (Gastroenteritis)?
Gastroenteritis, commonly
known as Stomach Flu, is the inflammation of the
gastrointestinal track, and involves both the stomach and the small
intestine. It is completely unrelated to influenza. This
inflammation is mostly caused by an infection from certain viruses,
although less often; it is also caused by bacteria, their toxins,
parasites, or an adverse reaction to something in the diet or
medication. Around the globe, 5 to 8 million people die because of
the Stomach Flu each year, and it is a primary cause of death among
infants and children under 5. About 50% of cases of Stomach Flu as
food borne illnesses are due to Norovirus. Another 20% of the
cases (and the majority of severe cases in children) are due to
rotavirus.
Some of the sources of the Stomach
Flu include food that is improperly prepared, seafood, dairy
products and bakery products. They all cause varying symptoms but
generally result in diarrhea. As it has no vaccine, people
with the Stomach Flu are simply instructed to "rest it out", having
liquid foods and oral rehydration solutions if they wish. Stomach
Flu is also contagious, and can be passed from one person to
another, which is why it is essential for someone with
Gastroenteritis to wash their hands after going to the toilet and
before preparing any foods.
