Stomach Flu in Baby, Toddlers or Children
Stomach flu is a leading cause of
death in babies and children under the age of 5. Have your child’s
blood, urine and stool tested for bacteria. It is important for the
child to be isolated from other children during the recovery period,
and should remain at home. Most day cares and schools have rules
regarding the duration your child must remain at home, usually until
the symptoms have completely cleared. Children should be offered
plenty of fluids or oral rehydration drinks to avoid dehydration due
to diarrhea, which is one of the primary symptoms of stomach flu.
Fruit juices and Soft Drinks should be avoided, as the sugar content
in them can worsen the diarrhea. Infants should continue to be
breast- or bottle-fed as normal.
What to do
If your child is vomiting, give
smaller amounts of fluid more often, rather then larger amounts a
few times a day. If he or she is vomiting frequently, or simply
cannot hold down fluids, call a pediatrician for advice as they may
need hospital care. Parents follow the BRAT diet when it comes to
stomach flu, which is to feed them foods such as bananas, rice,
applesauce and toast. Dairy products and spicy foods are avoided as
these can irritate the stomach.
